230 bad debt judgments were awarded against companies and consumers this January - these carried a total value of E10.1m

In terms of numbers of awards, this January's figure is very much in line with January 2016 - when 232 judgments were issued.

However, in terms of value, there has been an almost 70% drop this January compared to last (E10.1m vs E33.4m).

61% of the value of this January's bad debt judgment awards were against consumers in 170 separate decisions. E2.6m of these awards were in favour of the Revenue Commissioner with a further E1.85m going to the Banks and E538k to the Credit Unions.

Commercial judgments this January had a total value of just under E4m. Approximately E2.7m of this was awarded to companies in the construction sector in three separate judgments.

Local Authorities (City and County Councils etc) and the Revenue Commissioner received the highest number of commercial judgment awards in their favour - 19 and 10 respectively - these had a combined value of almost E469k.
